In an increasingly connected world, with more physical mobility than ever before and the elimination of virtual borders, we are all tasked with learning new ways of connecting that respect cultural differences, autonomy, and individual boundaries. Technology and global events—both celebratory and tragic—have brought individuals together in new and unexpected ways. From the Olympics and World Cup to the global economic meltdown and the Haitian crisis, we are consistently running up against and away from borders, crossing them, creating them, and breaking them down.

This year’s Cultural Impact Conference will look at how individuals and communities are addressing the challenge of borders—geographic, cultural, political, physical, mental and emotional. We will consider the relationship between identity and borders, whether and how borders are becoming more fluid, and the ways in which changing borders shape our behavior, goals and ultimate fulfillment.

Participants will be invited to explore:

  • Borders and Community Service: what types of borders and boundaries do we need to understand to be effective and respectful in both clinical work and community settings? What do we take for granted?
  • Borders and Technology: How has technology changed our perception of borders? How is technology breaking down borders? In light of that, are we respecting appropriate boundaries?
  • Borders and Higher Education: How has increased connectivity changed higher education and how do we respect cultural differences in learning and belief systems?
  • Borders and Psychology: How are changing borders affecting the field of psychology and what can we as psychologists do to help individuals and communities overcome oppressive borders and maintain boundaries that are the core of cultural and individual identity?
  • Borders and Business: How do companies maintain organizational effectiveness when they become multi-national corporations? How do intervention tools such as training, leadership development, selection and performance management interact with cultural differences and employment laws?
