Degree Completion and Conferral
Students must complete all of their program requirements before their degree can be conferred. This includes coursework, clinical training (practicum/internship), and thesis/dissertation as required by your program of study.
In addition, students in a Master's or Doctoral Program must complete the Petition for Degree Completion. Candidates for degree conferral must submit their petition by the deadline on their conferral date (see charts per location designation below and refer to the Student Handbook as needed).
The Office of the Registrar and Academic Department will assess the candidates' eligibility for degree conferral. The official conferral date will be the end of the semester in which all degree requirements have been met.
Diplomas are issued 8 - 12 weeks after conferral clearance.
Note: Clinical Psy.D. students petitioning for their M.A. clinical degrees are also subject to these requirements.
Petition for Program Completion

Students completing Dissertation or Thesis, Internship or Practicum
If students have completed their coursework during the summer semester but are still completing their dissertation or thesis, must work with their Thesis chair or the Dissertation Assistant to understand the requirements needed to consider their work complete. Please refer to the Degree Completion section of the Student Handbook for more information on degree conferral dates.
Students on Clinical Training (Internship or Practicum)
Chicago & Online students - In order to participate in the July 26, 2013 commencement ceremony, students must complete all degree requirements by September 4, 2013. If there are questions, students must contact their Academic Department for additional clarification and/or details.
Diplomas
Diplomas are produced after the degree is conferred according to the schedule listed above. Diplomas will be mailed as long as the student does not have holds on his or her record, the diploma will be mailed within eight to twelve weeks. Diplomas are mailed to the address provided on the Petition for Degree Completion form. When petitioning, students must enter their permanent address and note that we cannot deliver to P.O. Boxes. If something changes, please e-mail as indicated below to ensure that the diploma is directed to the correct address. Students will not receive transcripts, a diploma, or other official school documentation until all library books are returned and any outstanding tuition and fees or other indebtedness to the institution are paid, and financial aid exit counseling is complete. Once a hold is resolved, students are responsible for contacting their respective Student Services offices. Diplomas will not be ordered until all holds are resolved and students contact the appropriate Student Services office.
Diploma Name
Diplomas are issued in the name on the petition for program completion. The diploma name may not include any degree abbreviation or other titles. Changes to the diploma name and address must be made within five (5) business days after the email confirmation from Student Services. Any changes made after this will require the student to re-request their diploma by the Duplicate Diploma Request form. The student will then be responsible for the cost of ordering a duplicate diploma.
